President & CEO | Axo Metals Corp. (TSXV: AXO) | Former mining equity analyst leading the San Antonio gold restart in Sonora, Mexico

"Took Axo Metals public, financed it, and secured the key federal permit to return the past-producing San Antonio gold project in Sonora, Mexico, to production"

Mining Executive

Biography

Jonathan Egilo is President, CEO, and a director of Axo Metals Corp. (TSXV: AXO — the TSX Venture Exchange, where Canadian junior mining companies list), a Halifax-based company bringing the past-producing San Antonio gold project in Sonora, Mexico, back toward production. Resource investors should note him for the speed of that sequence: since taking the CEO role in June 2024, he has listed Axo on the public markets, raised more than $50 million, bought San Antonio out of Osisko Development's portfolio, and won the project's main federal environmental permit. That is the early-stage checklist many juniors spend five or more years working through.

Egilo trained as a mining engineer (Bachelor of Applied Science, Queen's University) before crossing into capital markets. He covered precious and base metals equities as a research analyst at Desjardins Capital Markets, with earlier roles at National Bank Financial and at Detour Gold, the Ontario gold producer acquired by Agnico Eagle in 2020. His record at Axo so far: a June 2025 IPO that raised $11.5 million; the January 2026 closing of the San Antonio acquisition; an upsized $40.25 million bought-deal financing (a pre-arranged offering sold through underwriters) a month later; and, in July 2026, approval of the project's MIA (Manifestacion de Impacto Ambiental — Mexico's federal Environmental Impact Statement, the primary permit to build and operate a mine). Step-out drilling (holes beyond the edge of the known deposit) then returned 18.0 metres of 8.15 g/t gold and 46.5 metres of 1.43 g/t gold from surface at the new Luz del Cobre target, roughly 750 metres beyond the current resource.

His approach favors permitted, brownfield ground — former producing mines where the infrastructure is already built. San Antonio's Luz del Cobre open pit was mined from 2011 to 2018, and the site retains a stockpile, waste dumps, a carbon-in-column plant (which recovers gold from solution), and a camp, all covered by the new permit. Axo is spending its capital on drilling rather than construction: evaluating the Sapuchi deposit as a starter pit (a smaller first phase whose cash flow can help fund the remainder) and testing whether near-surface mineralization extends the resource, which stands at 576,000 ounces of indicated gold plus 544,000 inferred ounces. The company's second asset is the La Huerta copper discovery in Jalisco, Mexico.

Following Egilo now means watching an execution story: the remaining Change of Use of Soils approval for the Sapuchi, Golfo de Oro, and California deposits (targeted around the end of 2026), three drill rigs testing Luz del Cobre, and the financing decisions that come with moving from exploration toward production. His run as a public-company CEO is short — he has led Axo since 2024 — so the longer record sits in his analyst and operating years, not at Axo. What is verifiable so far is the sequence he has completed: listing, financing, acquisition, and the key permit, each announced with numbers an investor can check.

Axo Metals Targets First Gold on the Pad in Late 2027

  • Top takeaway Egilo argues Axo Metals' competitive advantage is Mexico permitting execution, the ability to buy stalled but high-quality projects and unblock them; he notes all three group companies have received permits in the last ten months.
  • He frames the San Antonio deal as resurfacing value in an asset that simply needed a change of hands, structured all-stock so Osisko Gold Group participates in the restart rather than cashing out.
  • He claims a six-month permitting timeline against the one to one-and-a-half year norm most developers plan around, which lets Axo run engineering early and shortens the overall schedule to construction.
  • He argues the initial oxide phase of roughly 40,000-50,000 ounces a year should generate enough early cash flow to self-fund the later sulphide mill and lift production to 100,000 ounces a year or more.
  • He is measured on sulphide metallurgy, saying existing studies point to about 90% recovery in a standard agitated leach but that flotation has not been tested yet and remains an optimisation avenue.

A roughly C$7 million all-stock purchase handed Axo Metals a permitted past-producing gold site that is already about 70% built. The guest says permitting, not geology, stalled the project: he got SEMARNAT approval in six months, versus one to one-and-a-half years typical. Engineering finishes in 2026, construction starts early 2027, and first gold is stacked on the pad in late 2027. Step-out drilling 800 metres beyond the resource cut 47 metres of oxide at 1.4 g/t gold, and oxide growth is the cheapest path. A PEA lands early 2027; the guest expects debt funding for a build in the tens of millions, with oxide gold self-funding a later mill.
