Tyron Breytenbach
Capital Markets Advisor, Lithium Africa Corp. (co-founder and former CEO) | Independent Director, RUA GOLD | P.Geo.
"Co-founding Lithium Africa Corp. and structuring its 50/50 lithium joint venture with Ganfeng; former mining analyst and exploration geologist."
Biography
Tyron Breytenbach, P.Geo., is a professional geologist and mining finance veteran who co-founded Lithium Africa Corp. (TSXV: LAF) and ran it as chief executive until July 2026. His relevance to resource investors comes from what he built there: a 1,675 km² land package around South Africa's past-producing Springbok spodumene mine (spodumene is the hard-rock mineral mined for lithium) and a 50/50 joint venture with Ganfeng Lithium, one of the world's largest lithium producers. He remains a capital markets advisor to Lithium Africa and an independent director of RUA GOLD.
His career spans the technical and financial sides of mining. After earning a BSc (Honours) in geology from South Africa's Rand Afrikaans University, he spent roughly a decade as an exploration geologist focused on orogenic and epithermal gold deposits, with a specialty in resource estimation — calculating how much contained metal a deposit actually hosts. He then moved into capital markets, working as an equity analyst and investment banker at Cormark Securities (where he was a senior partner and managing director), Stifel Canada, VIII Capital, and Beacon Securities, and later served as Senior Vice President of Capital Markets at gold producer Aris Mining.
At Lithium Africa he applied both lenses: technically credible ground, structured for what public markets will fund. He listed the company through a qualifying transaction (the TSX Venture Exchange's route for taking junior companies public), raised C$8.5 million in a private placement (a share sale to select investors) with a lead order from Purpose Global Resource Fund, and set up the LAR-GFL joint venture with GFL International, an affiliate of China's Ganfeng Lithium, which holds an indirect 50% interest in hard-rock pegmatite exploration assets (pegmatites are coarse-grained rocks that host lithium minerals) across South Africa, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, and Zimbabwe. He argued the lithium bear market was the time to build, telling Investing News Network in June 2025 that the company was 'planting the seeds now that investors are going to reap when the next (lithium) bull market comes back.'
Breytenbach stepped down as CEO and director on July 1, 2026, handing the role to exploration geologist Dr. Tom Benson and staying on as capital markets advisor. He has chaired the audit committee at RUA GOLD since joining its board as an independent director in 2024. For investors, following him is a way to watch how a geologist-analyst evaluates African lithium ground, structures partnerships with major producers, and finances a junior company through a downturn.
