Steven Kohler
Lead Technical Advisor | Westward Gold Inc. | Carlin-type gold explorationist; Cortez Hills discovery team
"Cortez Hills discovery-team geologist; eleven Carlin-type gold discoveries, six of which became mines; now guiding Westward Gold's SSD Target work."
Biography
Steven Koehler is the Lead Technical Advisor to Westward Gold Inc. (CSE: WG; OTCQB: WGLIF), a junior explorer drilling the 84-square-kilometre Toiyabe Hills gold property in Lander County, Nevada. He matters to resource investors for one concrete reason: he is a discovery geologist. Company disclosures describe 30-plus years of exploration across Nevada's Carlin Trend and Battle Mountain–Eureka Trend, with participation in eleven Carlin-type gold discoveries — six of which became producing mines. Carlin-type deposits, where fine-grained gold sits in chemically reactive carbonate rocks, account for most of Nevada's largest gold mines.
Koehler's signature credential is Cortez Hills. He served as a Senior Geologist on the initial discovery team at the Cortez Hills deposit, found in 2002 under the Placer Dome-operated Cortez Joint Venture and today part of Nevada Gold Mines; Westward Gold states that his contributions to that discovery were recognized with the 2005 Thayer Lindsley International Discovery Award, which honours significant global mineral finds. In the company's August 25, 2026 news release he also recounts a mid-1990s program he led in Nevada's Carlin North region — initial trenching that exposed a 20-metre-wide gold-bearing fault, followed by deeper drilling that he says ended in the discovery and delineation of the Pete Bajo underground mine.
His method at Westward is re-logging and rethinking old data rather than chasing headlines. Since 2022 the technical team has built the SSD Target beneath the property's known Courtney Zone by integrating surface mapping, detailed re-logging of legacy core and reverse-circulation (RC — a lower-cost, chip-sampling drill method) holes, gravity and magnetic surveys, and historical geochemistry; by April 2026 that campaign had re-logged 3,273 metres of core and 4,116 metres of RC chips under Koehler's lead. His stated philosophy — “relentless attention to detail” learned from past Carlin discoveries — targets high-grade mineralization controlled by high-angle fault structures, which 2026 trenching and drilling have since intersected.
The results give investors something specific to follow: 2026 holes at SSD returned 12.0 metres of 8.06 g/t (grams of gold per tonne) gold within 27.0 metres of 3.72 g/t (T2601) and 34.9 metres of 2.91 g/t including 4.1 metres of 16.15 g/t (T2602), with mineralization open in all directions. Reading Koehler's commentary in Westward's releases — and coverage of the project such as CEO.CA's Lab Report video series, where his remarks were featured in August 2026 — is a working education in how an experienced Nevada geologist reasons from raw data to drill targets. His public record outside Westward Gold disclosures is thin; note also that company filings spell his surname “Koehler.”
Key Quotes
"Relentless attention to detail – as I’m often reminded of by colleagues – is what ultimately drives success in Carlin-type gold exploration, and past discoveries have much to teach us in this regard."
