Sonu Johl
EVP, CFO and Treasurer | Ring Energy | Upstream oil & gas finance executive with 20+ years of energy banking experience
"Leading Ring Energy's finance function after 20+ years in upstream oil and gas investment banking at Raymond James and Citi."
Biography
Sundip "Sonu" S. Johl is Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer of Ring Energy, a The Woodlands, Texas-based upstream oil and gas operator focused on developing oil and liquids-rich properties in the Central Basin Platform of the Permian Basin.
Johl joined Ring Energy on February 27, 2026, after more than 20 years in upstream oil and gas investment banking, corporate finance, and strategic advisory. He spent his most recent six years as Managing Director and Co-Head of Energy Investment Banking at Raymond James & Associates, where he led coverage of exploration and production companies with a focus on Permian Basin operators and advised on M&A and capital markets transactions across the upstream sector. Before Raymond James, he was a Director in Citi's Global Energy Group.
Although Johl's career sits in oil and gas rather than metals mining, the toolkit is directly relevant to resource investors. His work has centered on how E&P operators fund development drilling programs, structure hedges, and value reserves, the oil and gas equivalent of a mineral resource estimate. The same discipline applies when sizing development-stage mining projects.
Johl holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University, an unconventional starting point that reflects how he approaches the CFO seat: as an analytical, data-driven finance leader rather than a career banker. For investors comparing Ring Energy to Permian peers, his six years on the energy banking side give him a close read on how the Street models inventory, capital intensity, and free cash flow at upstream operators.
For a commodity investor, Johl is most useful as a window into how an experienced upstream finance executive frames Permian Basin development economics, capital allocation, and acquisition discipline. His direct relevance to hard-rock mining is limited, but the underlying toolkit, including reserve-based lending, hedging, drill-bit economics, and AISC (All-In Sustaining Cost, the per-unit cost of keeping production online), translates cleanly from oil to metals.
