"Leading Excellon Resources' restart of the Mallay Silver Mine and securing Glencore offtake financing"

Mining Executive

Biography

Shawn Howarth is a mining executive with over 22 years of experience spanning project evaluation, corporate finance, stakeholder relations, and corporate strategy. As President and Chief Executive Officer of Excellon Resources Inc. (TSXV: EXN | OTCQB: EXNRF), Howarth has led the company's strategic pivot toward becoming an emerging silver producer through the acquisition and restart of the Mallay Silver Mine in Peru.

Under Howarth's leadership, Excellon secured a critical offtake and financing agreement with Glencore to fund the restart of the Mallay operation. He has overseen a comprehensive work program that included mill refurbishment, assay lab upgrades, infill drilling campaigns, and the expansion to three drill rigs. His methodical approach to restarting the mine has been characterized by a focus on measured milestones, including achieving over 500% increases in indicated silver mineral resources and advancing mill pre-commissioning activities.

Howarth's portfolio management extends beyond Mallay. Excellon holds a diversified suite of exploration-stage assets under his tenure, including the Kilgore advanced gold project in Idaho, USA, and the Silver City high-grade epithermal silver district in Saxony, Germany. The company also controls the Evolución property adjacent to Hecla's San Sebastian mine, totaling 31,280 hectares with 17 kilometres of strike length, providing additional growth upside for investors.

Prior to his current role, Howarth built extensive experience across the mining value chain, from early-stage project evaluation through to corporate development and financing. His background in corporate finance and stakeholder relations has been instrumental in navigating Excellon through operational transitions and securing strategic partnerships with major commodity trading houses like Glencore. For mining stock investors, Howarth represents a CEO executing a clear mine-to-market strategy in the silver space, with a track record of hitting operational milestones and expanding resource bases.

Excellon Resources – First Concentrate Production At The Mallay Silver-Lead-Zinc Mine In Peru

  • Top takeaway Argues first concentrate is a de-risking milestone that proves the metallurgy and surface infrastructure rather than commercial production, framing the rest of 2026 as setting the mine up for a bigger 2027.
  • Believes the ~3 oz/ton silver-equivalent feed being processed now simply reflects material accessible at restart, and expects grades to rise as development reaches the deeper, higher-grade zones described in the 43-101.
  • His growth thesis is that mineralization continues below ~300 m and parallel zones exist west of the anticline; he points to infill drilling, a deep geophysics hole, and the undrilled Traceros surface anomaly 6 km west of the mine as the path to his stated 5-10 year mine-life objective.
  • Sees expansion scenarios toward 1,000 tpd because the mill can take another ball mill and additional flotation capacity, but conditions this on drilling proving multiple ore feeds.
  • Expects revenue to exceed the burn rate during 2026 on roughly 10 million cash plus an undrawn 5 million facility, and promises heavy news flow: infill and step-out results, mine planning updates, the Silver City spin-out and advancement of Kilgore.

Excellon's Mallay silver-lead-zinc mine in Peru produced first concentrate (the metal-rich powder shipped to smelters) after milling about 12,000 tonnes in July. The concentrator is deliberately running at 400 tonnes per day — two-thirds of its 600-tonne rating — with 2027 set as the first full production year. Management expects revenue to exceed the monthly burn this year, starting from about $10 million cash plus an undrawn $5 million credit facility. Silver reports to the lead concentrate and zinc ships separately; current feed runs about three ounces per ton silver equivalent. Half of a 10,000-meter infill program is done; the stated 3-to-4-year mine life has no reserves, with drilling aiming for 5-to-10 years.

Key Quotes

"This new resource estimate is a major milestone for Excellon and a critical step forward on restart planning - but it is just the beginning. We have substantially expanded the historic mineral inventory we acquired at Mallay before incorporating any results from the current drill program."

— Mallay Mine resource estimate announcement

"The work completed over the last several months, including finishing mill refurbishment, assay lab upgrades, completion of our initial infill drill program and the expansion to three drill rigs, positions us to begin testing the process plant in a measured way."
