Ross Beatty
Resource Entrepreneur and Investor | Founder, Pan American Silver and Equinox Gold | Chairman, Lumina Metals
"Serial mining company-builder who founded Pan American Silver and Equinox Gold and has spent five decades building, selling and backing copper, silver and gold companies"
Biography
Ross Beaty (his surname is frequently misspelled "Beatty" in video listings) is a Vancouver-based geologist and serial mining entrepreneur whose companies have repeatedly carried mineral projects from discovery through financing to production and sale. For resource investors that matters, because few people in the sector have completed the full junior-mining cycle — find it, fund it, build it, sell it — as often or as profitably. He is currently chairman of Lumina Metals, which is advancing what the company bills as Europe's largest copper-silver district, in western Poland.
The track record is concrete. His first junior (an early-stage exploration company), Equinox Resources, was sold to Hecla Mining for $107 million in 1994; he put the proceeds into founding Pan American Silver, which grew into the world's second-largest silver producer by market value before he retired as its chair in 2021. He founded Equinox Gold with an explicit target — an Americas-based million-ounce gold producer — and chaired it from 2017 through its 2025 merger with Calibre Mining and its roughly US$5.1-billion, all-stock acquisition of Orla Mining completed in July 2026, after which he moved to chairman emeritus and special adviser.
Alongside those producers he has founded more than a dozen resource and renewable-energy companies over five decades, including the Lumina group of copper-gold explorers: Lumina Gold sold its Cangrejos project — Ecuador's largest primary gold deposit — to China's CMOC for C$581 million in 2025, and Luminex Resources combined with Adventus Mining in 2023. Alterra Power, his geothermal venture, extended the same playbook into clean electricity. The honours followed: the Order of Canada (2017), the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (2018) and The Northern Miner's Lifetime Achievement Award (2024).
His method is straightforward. A geologist by training — he holds an MSc with distinction in mineral exploration from Imperial College London — Beaty backs competent exploration teams and funds them properly rather than promoting on headlines. He favours copper and silver on long-term supply-demand grounds, runs several companies at once so investors can hold a portfolio of his projects, and keeps large personal stakes in what he chairs — about 38% of Lumina Metals. He is blunt about risk — "mining can make you rich or wipe you out" is the title of one of his 2026 interviews — and he weighs jurisdiction, infrastructure and social licence as heavily as the orebody itself.
Following him is a window into cycle judgment as much as company selection. His current focus is Lumina Metals, which listed on the TSX in 2026 and added a Warsaw Stock Exchange listing; its sediment-hosted copper-silver discoveries at Nowa Sól, Mozów and Sulmierzyce target the same style of mineralization that makes Poland a major copper producer. Investors can hear him unpack copper, silver and gold cycles in regular interviews, including on Jimmy Connor's Bloor Street Capital channel, where he discussed the Lumina Metals venture and joined the channel's copper-investing master class. He is also a leading conservation philanthropist — UBC's Beaty Biodiversity Museum carries his name — a reminder that in his model mining and environmental stewardship are meant to coexist.
