Philippe Hynes
President & CIO | Tonus Capital Inc. | Small-Cap Value Manager
"Value-driven small-cap investing in mining and energy names through Tonus Capital"
Biography
Philippe Hynes is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Tonus Capital Inc., a Montreal-based independent investment firm he has led since 2011. A CFA charterholder, he runs a value-oriented, long-only strategy focused on the small-cap segment of the market — the part of the resource universe where one stock-picker's diligence can still drive returns and where mispricings tend to persist longest.
Hynes has singled out mining companies and exploration & production (E&P) oil operators as two corners of the small-cap space that deserve closer investor attention. His approach follows the classic value playbook: buying businesses trading below what an honest assessment of their assets and cash flows implies, then waiting for the market to re-rate them.
Beyond Tonus, Hynes teaches finance at Concordia University's John Molson School of Business, where he brings portfolio-construction theory into contact with real small-cap screens. He also oversees investor-relations and capital-raising work for the firm, giving him direct exposure to the financing structures that junior miners rely on — flow-through financings, private placements, and the warrants-and-units paper that frequently defines the junior end of the TSX.
Hynes was profiled by CFA Montreal in its April 2016 newsletter as part of its emerging-manager coverage, and was referenced in the Pension Pulse blog's review of next-generation portfolio managers. In April 2026 he joined Jimmy Connor on the Bloor Street Capital podcast for an episode titled "Finding Value in Small Cap Stocks," walking through how he screens for mispriced small-caps and what commodity-linked names are on his watchlist.
The public record on Hynes is still thin: no audited long-term track record, no named institutional clients, and no specific stock calls are publicly disclosed. What is verifiable is his role running Tonus Capital, his CFA designation, his Concordia teaching post, and his stated focus on resource-linked small-caps. Investors following his views should weight his commentary accordingly and look for the next public appearance or regulatory filing to firm up the picture.
