President & CEO | Vizsla Copper Corp. | Junior copper-gold explorer in British Columbia and Alaska

"CEO of Vizsla Copper; structured the $32M all-share deal that made Agnico Eagle a ~22% shareholder"

Mining Executive

Biography

Peter Mercer is President and CEO of Vizsla Copper Corp. (TSX-V: VCU), a junior copper-gold explorer based in Vancouver. He is the executive behind the $32 million, all-share deal that saw Agnico Eagle Mines take roughly 22% of Vizsla Copper in exchange for two of its Alaska projects — a rare case of a top-tier gold producer becoming the largest shareholder of a small explorer. That transaction put his company on the short list of junior copper names carrying major-producer backing.

Mercer helped create Vizsla Copper in 2023, when Vizsla Silver spun out its copper projects into a separate listing and he moved from leading corporate development at Vizsla Silver to run the new company. Its flagship asset is Woodjam, a porphyry copper-gold project — the large, low-grade deposit type that supplies most of the world's copper — in central British Columbia's Cariboo region, alongside the Copper Creek project elsewhere in the province. His mandate has been to advance those assets far enough to attract major-producer capital, which the Agnico transaction delivered.

The Agnico deal shows how Mercer thinks about growth. Vizsla paid entirely in shares priced at $1.26, preserving its cash while adding the Delta polymetallic VMS project (volcanogenic massive sulphide — metals deposited by hot fluids on ancient seafloors) and the Helm Bay gold project, both 100%-owned by Agnico before the sale. Because Agnico's stake would exceed the 20% threshold, TSX Venture rules required approval from disinterested shareholders to accept the producer as a "control person," with a vote scheduled for November 18. Agnico also received warrants (options to buy shares at preset prices), aligning it with Vizsla's share price. The structure added two projects without spending treasury cash, at the cost of dilution that a major's endorsement helps support.

For junior mining investors, Mercer is worth following as a working example of how small companies negotiate with majors and use equity as deal currency rather than only as a financing tool. His public interviews walk through the mechanics of such transactions in practical terms. What to watch at Vizsla Copper: drill results at Woodjam, first exploration at Delta and Helm Bay, and how the company uses Agnico's presence on its share register in subsequent financings.

Why Agnico Eagle Wants 22% of Vizsla Copper | Peter Mercer

  • Top takeaway Mercer argues copper is a bellwether metal for the global economy - the base for EVs, batteries and cleaner technologies - while supply tightens as mines get deeper and grades fall, and he believes Vizsla Copper is positioned at the beginning of a strong copper market.
  • He frames the Agnico Eagle deal as a strategic alignment rather than a nominal investment: Agnico wanted an Alaska-based operator and copper exposure, and took equity to participate in the upside.
  • He contends the newly staked Miller Project, adjacent to the producing Mulligan porphyry in BC, could host continuations of the mined porphyry centers and structural trends onto Vizsla's ground on both sides.
  • He claims 2025 drilling proved that several identified BC porphyry centers carry high-grade material, and says next year's program will drill to expand discoveries such as the just-released Deer Horn result.

Vizsla Copper's Peter Mercer argues copper's strength is just beginning as EV, battery and clean tech demand rises while mines get deeper and lower grade. Agnico Eagle takes about 19.9% of Vizsla Copper in an all-share deal for the Delta and Helm Bay projects, rising to 22% after shareholder approval. The guest says Agnico sought copper exposure and an Alaska-based operator, taking equity alignment rather than cash plus rights to join future financings. Newly staked Miller copper-gold project sits beside the producing Mount Milligan mine, where Mercer sees porphyry systems (large deposit types) continuing onto Vizsla ground. Vizsla's biggest drill program yet spans 40,000 metres across Alaska and British Columbia, with Alaska assays due over the next two to three months.
