Michael Murphy
Executive Chairman | South Pacific Metals Corp. (TSX-V: SPMC) | Torex Gold founder and mining financier
"Founder of Torex Gold who helped raise over $1 billion for it; now Executive Chairman of South Pacific Metals and its four-project PNG gold-copper portfolio."
Biography
Michael Murphy is Executive Chairman of South Pacific Metals Corp. (TSX-V: SPMC), a Canadian-listed explorer running four gold-copper projects in Papua New Guinea's Highlands. The portfolio includes Kili Teke, a porphyry copper-gold project — porphyry deposits are large igneous systems that can host very big copper-gold resources — carrying a 4.2-million-ounce gold-equivalent inferred resource (the lowest-confidence estimate category under NI 43-101, Canada's mining disclosure standard). It also includes the Osena and Anga projects, which sit on either side of K92 Mining's Kainantu mine. Murphy is a mining financier and company builder, and he is the one responsible for keeping this portfolio funded.
According to South Pacific Metals' corporate biography, Murphy founded Torex Gold (TSX: TXG), which grew from explorer into one of Mexico's significant gold producers at its Morelos complex in Guerrero state. He spent 12 years on Torex's board and helped raise over $1 billion in debt and equity — the capital that carried the company from exploration into mine construction and operation. Before Torex, he spent 15 years in London financial services with Merrill Lynch, DLJ and Credit Suisse. He holds MBA and M.Sc. degrees and the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
His method at South Pacific Metals is deliberate position-building in a proven gold district, backed by patient financing. "We built this position deliberately, and this is the stage where years of groundwork start to show up in the drill core," he said in a June 2026 corporate update, when two drill rigs were turning at the new Megabe target near Ontenu. Exploration is run by CEO Timo Jauristo, who brings more than 40 years across senior roles at Goldcorp and Placer Dome; Murphy's focus is the corporate side — structuring raises and sequencing the four projects. In September 2026 the company closed a C$20.0 million equity offering led by BMO Capital Markets, issuing units at C$0.83 with two-year warrants (options to buy shares at a set price) exercisable at C$1.40.
For resource investors, following Murphy is a practical look at how a junior mining company is built and funded: when to raise, at what price, and how to keep several projects advancing at once. The near-term markers are drill results from Ontenu Northeast, a first porphyry test at Ontenu Central, and work around the Kili Teke resource, where 2026 sampling targeted upside outside the existing 4.2-million-ounce inferred estimate. He presented the company's story at the Metals Investor Forum in September 2026.
