Mining Executive

Biography

Martino De Ciccio is the Chief Executive Officer of Montage Gold (TSXV: MAU), the Canadian company behind the Koné Gold Project in Côte d'Ivoire. Appointed CEO in February 2024, he guided Montage from junior developer to producer: the mine poured its first gold in 2026, reportedly on budget and ahead of schedule, and the stock's roughly 32-fold return since its 2020 listing has made him a regular guest on gold-focused interview shows. For resource investors, he is one of the few executives currently running a 300,000-ounce-per-year build in West Africa — the stretch of the mining cycle where construction execution decides whether years of planning are destroyed or rewarded.

His track record sits behind some of the sector's larger corporate transformations. He started at La Mancha Resources, where he helped take the company from a roughly $20 million market capitalization to a $500 million take-private acquisition, then managed strategy for the private successor as it grew into one of the largest gold investment funds, holding cornerstone stakes in Evolution Mining and Endeavour Mining. He joined Endeavour Mining in 2015 as Vice President, Strategy and Investor Relations, and later served as Deputy CFO and Head of Investor Relations while Endeavour grew from about $250 million in market value into a FTSE 100-listed, top-tier gold producer. He also sits on the boards of Northisle Copper and Gold and Bluestone Resources, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from McGill University and the CFA designation.

De Ciccio's approach emphasizes financing discipline during construction. To fund Koné, Montage arranged roughly $625 million in gold forward sales (contracts that pre-sell future gold production at a set price, locking in funding at the cost of some upside) alongside project debt and equity, reducing the dilution that typically burdens junior developers. He has framed the company's future as a multi-asset West African producer, saying "now is a good time to be developing our multi-asset portfolio in West Africa from many perspectives," and Montage holds additional ground in Côte d'Ivoire beyond Koné.

Following De Ciccio offers a working case study in mine financing and build execution in West Africa. His commentary covers gold markets, project funding structures, and Côte d'Ivoire, now one of Africa's more stable mining jurisdictions. Montage's next phase — ramping Koné toward more than 300,000 ounces per year over a 16-year mine life — is the part of the cycle where capital allocation shows up directly in shareholder returns, which is why gold investors track what he does as closely as what he says.

  • Top takeaway The guest argues grade alone doesn't make a mine: after 20 years in the sector he evaluates strip ratio, metallurgy and infrastructure together, citing Koné's low strip, port access, a sealed highway 20 kilometers away and a high-voltage power line 20 kilometers away as decisive advantages.
  • He lays out his playbook of finding overlooked, buildable assets with the right backers (the Lundin family) in a weak market, then protecting the capital structure so every subsequent portfolio addition accrues to existing shareholders.
  • He contends Montage still has a re-rate ahead just from starting up Koné, trading at high double-digit forward free cash flow multiples versus 5-10x for producers, and that the market is not pricing the growth from Didievi, Wendé and Mauritania.
  • He attributes the track record (Montage's 32X, plus Sanyu up about 500% and Northisle's rise from cents to ~$1.5 billion) to identifying real assets near existing production and infrastructure rather than chasing headline grades.
  • He says the goal is building a premier African gold producer, preferring to source the next project organically from the existing portfolio rather than chasing acquisitions.

Grade alone doesn't make a mine: strip ratio, metallurgy, infrastructure and costs decide whether a gold deposit actually works economically. Montage Gold achieved first gold pour at Koné on September 26, 2026, after securing permits, funding and construction in record time. Management funded Koné with over 90% project debt, keeping the share count tight so later acquisitions added value without heavy dilution. Koné targets 350,000 to 400,000 annual ounces for at least a decade, while Didievi, Wendé and Mauritania properties add growth the market isn't pricing. The CEO argues Montage trades at high double-digit free cash flow multiples versus 5 to 10 times for producers, implying a re-rate as Koné starts up.
