VP Exploration | Pirate Gold Corp. (TSXV: YARR) | P.Geo. who led New Found Gold's Queensway Project to a 2M+ oz resource

"Led Queensway to a 2M+ oz gold resource as New Found Gold's COO; now runs exploration at Pirate Gold's Moosehead zone in Newfoundland"

Mining Executive

Biography

Greg Matheson, P.Geo. (a licensed Professional Geoscientist), is Vice President of Exploration at Pirate Gold Corp. (TSXV: YARR), a Newfoundland-focused gold explorer. He directs exploration at the company's Treasure Island project, a roughly 90-kilometre stretch of the Valentine Lake Fault Zone in central Newfoundland that includes the high-grade Moosehead gold zone. Because he decides where the drills go, his comments on results and targets are a direct signal of how this district is unfolding.

He has spent more than 15 years taking gold projects from first discovery to resource definition (an engineering estimate of how much metal a deposit holds). As Chief Operating Officer of New Found Gold Corp., Matheson led the Queensway Project from 2018 and was publicly credited by the company with playing a key role in its discovery and advancement; by the time he stepped down as COO in February 2025, Queensway held a multi-million-ounce resource. Earlier in his career, as Exploration Manager of Northern Gold Mining, he was responsible for the discovery and delineation of the Garrison Gold Project in northeastern Ontario, and he has also served as a senior project manager with Osisko Mining.

His approach is structure-first. Matheson specializes in orogenic gold systems, in which gold is deposited along fault networks that channel mineralized fluids and which host many of the world's high-grade gold mines. At Moosehead he has traced the fault-and-vein network along more than 1,500 metres of strike (its horizontal extent) and to depths beyond 200 metres, and he expected parallel structures to exist alongside the main Eastern and Western faults. Drilling in August 2026 validated that model with the discovery of the gold-bearing Caribou Fault.

Investors can follow Matheson through Pirate Gold's news releases, where his quotes explain what drill results mean for the system, and through his discussion of Moosehead geology on CEO.CA's Lab Report video series. The current focus is extending high-grade zones at Moosehead while testing the Crippleback area, where first-pass drilling has confirmed a separate copper-gold porphyry-style discovery (metal dispersed in and around an ancient magma conduit). For anyone weighing whether central Newfoundland can host another district-scale gold camp, his technical commentary is worth reading.

Key Quotes

"The Moosehead zone comprises a broad network of faults and veins which to date have been traced along over 1500m of strike length and to depths exceeding 200m in the case of the Eastern Trend Fault. The discovery of the Caribou Fault was no surprise as we always believed that other parallel structures should exist here."

"The recent shallow drilling has shown that we have a fertile structure that is continuous along at least 400m and most importantly that it can host high-grade gold mineralization."
