George Ogilvie
President & CEO | Hercules Metals Corp. | Took Arizona Sonoran Copper from founding to Hudbay's ~C$1.5B acquisition (2026)
"Twice built and sold copper-gold juniors: Arizona Sonoran to Hudbay (2026) and Battle North Gold to Evolution Mining (2021); now advancing the Leviathan copper discovery in Idaho."
Biography
George Ogilvie, P.Eng., is a mining engineer who has built copper and gold juniors from startup or distress into premium buyouts — twice. He led Arizona Sonoran Copper Company from its 2021 creation to an all-share acquisition by Hudbay Minerals announced in March 2026 at a roughly 30% premium and a value near C$1.5 billion; before that, he rebuilt and sold Battle North Gold. For resource investors, his record answers a practical question: how a well-run junior gets from first drill hole to a takeout.
His 36-year operating base started in 1989 at AngloGold's ultra-deep Witwatersrand gold mines in South Africa, then ran through Hudbay's Ruttan mine in Manitoba, the McCreedy West mine in Sudbury, and an area-manager role at contractor Dynatec. As a chief executive he turned Rambler Metals and Mining from a grassroots explorer into a profitable copper-gold producer in Newfoundland, led the original Kirkland Lake Gold — lifting performance at the Macassa mine and acquiring St Andrew Goldfields — and rebuilt Rubicon Minerals as Battle North Gold, growing its resource to about 1.3 million ounces of gold, completing a feasibility study (the full engineering and economics case for a mine) showing a roughly 50% after-tax IRR (internal rate of return — the annualized return a project earns on invested capital), raising over C$100 million, and selling to Evolution Mining in May 2021 at a 45% premium.
Arizona Sonoran was the larger exit. Joining at the company's founding and taking it public, Ogilvie assembled the Cactus copper project on private land near Casa Grande, Arizona, in a historic mining district whose residents remember the benefits of the earlier mine — a setting that simplifies permitting. He bought down royalties, acquired the adjacent MainSpring property to convert the Parks/Salyer deposit to open-pit mining, and raised more than US$300 million. The October 2025 pre-feasibility study (PFS — staged engineering that defines how a mine would be built and what it would earn) outlined a 22-year mine life with an after-tax NPV (Net Present Value — future cash flows discounted to today's dollars) of US$2.30 billion at an 8% discount rate, a 22.8% IRR at US$4.25/lb copper, and about US$977 million of initial capital, reported under NI 43-101 (the Canadian standard governing public mineral-project disclosure). At full run-rate the design averaged 86,000 short tons of copper cathode (refined copper, the form traded on metal exchanges) per year, about 172 million pounds.
The method behind both exits is consistent: choose districts where private land and mining history shorten permitting, use infill drilling to convert Inferred resources into Measured and Indicated before spending heavily on engineering, stage each study off the preceding financing, and keep optionality open — at Cactus, that meant keeping Rio Tinto's Nuton venture (heap leaching recovers metal by trickling solution through crushed ore) as a possible joint-venture partner inside the PFS. He sold the company into a rising copper market rather than underwriting a roughly US$1 billion construction budget himself.
Since September 2026 he has restarted the cycle as President, CEO and director of Hercules Metals, owner of the Leviathan porphyry copper discovery (the deposit type that supplies most of the world's copper) in western Idaho, where the 2023 discovery hole cut 185 metres at 0.84% copper. He also chairs Arizona Standard Copper — the renamed Barksdale Resources — which raised C$14 million to drill the Sunnyside copper project in southern Arizona. Watching his next steps is a working education in how a junior moves from discovery to premium takeout.
