Bojan Pancevski
Chief European Political Correspondent | The Wall Street Journal | Author of The Nord Stream Conspiracy
"Leading the Wall Street Journal's investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage and its consequences for European energy security."
Biography
Bojan Pancevski is The Wall Street Journal's chief European political correspondent and the reporter behind the paper's investigation into the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage — the undersea explosions that ended the flow of Russian natural gas to Germany. He is not a mining analyst, and investors should read him for context rather than stock ideas: his reporting explains how war, sanctions, and sabotage now decide the supply and price of oil and gas in Europe, the backdrop that sets energy costs and industrial demand across the continent's commodity chain.
In more than two decades of reporting from Europe, he has covered the Eurozone debt crisis, Brexit, Russian assassinations and espionage, and the war in Ukraine. He joined the Journal in 2018 as Germany correspondent after nearly a decade at The Sunday Times in Vienna. His August 2024 investigation, "A Drunken Evening, a Rented Yacht," identified a six-person Ukrainian team aboard a chartered yacht as the likely saboteurs of a pipeline system worth roughly $20 billion, and reported that the operation cost around $250,000 — findings Ukrainian officials have denied. He expanded the story into the book The Nord Stream Conspiracy: The Inside Story of the Explosions That Shook the World (Macmillan, 2026), a New York Times Editors' Choice, and was part of the WSJ team named a 2025 Pulitzer Prize finalist for International Reporting. His recent coverage tracks Ukraine's drone strikes on Russian refineries, the G7 oil price cap (a ceiling on what buyers may pay for Russian crude), and Europe's shift to LNG (liquefied natural gas shipped by tanker).
His method is investigative reconstruction: court files from Germany's Nord Stream probe, interviews with intelligence officials and participants, checked against physical evidence. He frames energy as the central weapon in the Russia–West confrontation — how hydrocarbon revenue funds Russia's war economy, how strikes on refineries, pipelines, and undersea cables move supply, and how European governments weigh sanctions against their own energy bills.
For resource investors, his work is a running account of the geopolitical forces behind energy prices: sanctions design and enforcement, sabotage risk to infrastructure, and Europe's multi-year effort to replace Russian gas. That macro backdrop — gas and oil availability, industrial electricity costs — feeds directly into mining economics, from European smelting margins to exploration budgets. His focus is geopolitics and energy rather than mining equities, so treat his reporting as supply-side context, not stock research.
