Biography

Ammar Al-Joundi is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Agnico Eagle Mines Limited, one of the world's premier senior gold mining companies. Appointed CEO in February 2022 after serving as President since 2015, Al-Joundi has been instrumental in transforming Agnico Eagle into a gold sector leader through disciplined capital allocation, operational excellence, and strategic M&A. Under his leadership, Agnico Eagle completed its landmark merger with Kirkland Lake Gold in 2022, creating a combined entity with dominant positions in Canada's Abitibi greenstone belt and a diversified portfolio of high-quality assets across multiple jurisdictions.

Prior to rejoining Agnico Eagle, Al-Joundi served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Barrick Gold Corporation, the world's second-largest gold producer. His tenure at Barrick gave him direct experience managing one of the largest and most complex mining portfolios globally, navigating the capital-intensive challenges of large-scale gold and copper operations across the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East. His earlier career includes senior financial roles at Agnico Eagle and over two decades in corporate finance and banking within the mining industry.

Al-Joundi brings a rare combination of deep financial acumen and operational mining expertise to his role. His extensive background in capital markets, business strategy, and banking has shaped Agnico Eagle's conservative but effective approach to growth—prioritizing balance sheet strength, mine-building discipline, and returns on invested capital over reckless production growth. This philosophy has resonated strongly with institutional investors and has helped Agnico Eagle consistently trade at a premium valuation relative to gold mining peers.

For commodity investors, Al-Joundi's commentary on gold markets, capital allocation strategy, and the challenges facing the gold mining industry carries significant weight. As the leader of a top-tier senior producer with operations in Canada, Finland, Mexico, and Australia, his views on jurisdictional risk, operating costs, reserve replacement, and the long-term gold price outlook are closely watched by portfolio managers and mining analysts worldwide. He also serves on the board of CIBC, further reflecting his standing in Canadian corporate and financial circles.

  • Top takeaway Argues Agnico's regional, multi-decade approach — geologic potential over decades plus political stability, self-built mines, and deep local knowledge — makes capital allocation '90% knowledge' and explains roughly three decades of outperformance versus peers.
  • Frames the growth pipeline as unusually low risk: about 1.5 million ounces of added annual production from four mines that are 'already found' and 'already permitted,' built on existing infrastructure and employees.
  • Contends the market undervalues long-life mines because NPV resets after year 10 or 11, saying 'the way you make money in our business isn't by building the mine, it's by extending the mine.'
  • Points to employee retention — one-third the turnover of peers in its operating regions — as the source of the local knowledge and mine-level innovation behind Agnico's operating record.
  • Casts the Finland three-company consolidation as a deliberate decision made after six years of studying the assets, not a reaction to a rise in gold prices.

Agnico Eagle's regional strategy concentrates on jurisdictions with decades of geologic potential and political stability, because capital allocation is mostly knowledge. Canada's two biggest mines, Detour and Malartic, are each being grown past one million ounces a year using existing mills and infrastructure. Four already-permitted projects, including a fourth Nunavut mine and Upper Beaver, add 1.5 million ounces without new discovery or permitting risk. Net present value (today's worth of future cash) ignores mine cash flows after year 10, so long-life mines are undervalued, the CEO argues. A six-year review led to consolidating three companies controlling what Agnico's team calls the most prospective ground in Northern Europe.
